I send you, dear loved ones of Darryl, my deepest condolences. I have shed many tears since this news. I feel so horrible for your terrible loss. There are few people who can count so many friends as Darryl. Along with remembering the support he gave me as a writer, publishing my poem "Sno-Angel" in TTQ 5 - quite a vote of confidence for this young poet who only had one other publication under her belt at the time, I will remember how he led a community of thousands of Canadian poets, eliciting great respect and inspiring confidence for his leadership skills and personal attention to each of us, whom he counted as friends - and we loved him in return.
Here is a poem I wrote immediately upon seeing his face again with his obituary yesterday morning. I hope you will find comfort in it's dedication to Darryl, now at peace. It is the poem of an angel, speaking to someone here on earth during a time of stress, offering comfort.
Beautiful Angel Skies,
sheets of wings
and clouds of tress
worn down, shoulders
bearing stress
of old-born collections
of made-up findings
and betweens’
never happenings,
fears softly relaxing
to waves in curved rivers
round castles, passing
and washing down
to city light and bright
apple cheeks of love
for the Lord.
All blessings, Meredith Darling

To the Salach family...sending my deepest condolences to you at this most difficult time. I only knew Darryl for the last 6 weeks of his life, but I feel truly blessed to have known him. I was there to help him, and yet, he taught me so much in our short time together. I will be forever grateful for how he touched my life, and I will carry him with me always. Sending love and light from my heart to yours.
