WELGAN, Wanda (1927- 2011)

Peacefully on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the St. Catharines General Hospital, in her 84th year. Beloved wife of the late Joseph (2009) for 60 years. Dearly loved mother of Leslie and Deloris Welgan, Susan and Bill Penner, Lucie and Rick McCulloch and Julie and Paul Moiseff. Devoted and much loved Baci of Jae Penner, Joe (Jenna)Penner, Ben McCulloch, Chris and Sarah Moiseff, Dan Moiseff and fianc�©e Cassie Swales, David Moiseff and Heather Watson, and great-grandmother of Colby and Mason Penner and Hannah Moiseff. Pre-deceased by grandson Neil McCulloch(1994). Affectionately cared for by her extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Bill and Kim Broere (Elizabeth, Alexandra, Alexander, Mackenzie)Brian and Michelle Broere (Jamie)and Stephanie and John Howe. Survived by her sisters, Agnes Szegda and Christine Gorczynski, several brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, Kazimierz and Veronika Olejniczak, one brother Jozek Olejniczak, and sisters, Katherine Janiszewski, Irene Swaha, Anne Domagalski and Lillian Wasiak .
Born and raised in Poland, her family had to leave their home in 1943 following the outbreak of WWII and were sent to labour camps in Germany. In 1948 at 21 years of age she bravely emigrated on her own to Canada. She married and raised a family in St. Catharines, working tirelessly as a mother and homemaker, always happy to be close to her children, grandchildren and extended family. She made our home a welcome place for many relatives and friends.
Visitation will take place at the George Darte Funeral Chapel on Friday, June 24, 2011 from 6-9p.m. with prayers at 7p.m.. The Funeral Liturgy will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011, 9:45a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Rite of committal following at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MS Society of Canada. Special thanks to the kind doctors and staff of the St. Catharines General Hospital who cared for our mother during her brief stay.
