Margaret Smart posted a condolence

I remember Alfred with fondness. I was 11 when he came to Canada in 1948 to our parents farm, Orval and Winnifred Smart, near Shawville, Quebec. He was young, just 22. He was born in Poland and taken by the Germans in the Second World War to work on a farm in Germany. It was there that he met Martha. His sister Wanda was there also. Alfred escaped with other young men, and they travelled on foot across part of Germany, into France and then to Italy. They had to find food using their wits. When they reached the British in Italy they joined the British Eighth Army. After the war ended he was in Britain, and from there came to Canada as a displaced person to our farm. My parents thought highly of Alfred. My mother had four children by 1948, but she took time to teach Alfred English. He worked on our farm for at least two years. Then he worked on the completion of the Hydro Electric dam and installation on the Ottawa River at Portage du Fort. Following that, he went to work in the nickel mines in Sudbury, Ontario. Alfred brought Wanda, his sister, and Martha, his sweetheart to Canada. He and Martha were married and then had two children, Harry and Anne. My mother, Winnifred, kept in contact with Alfred until her death in 2009. I want to express my sympathy to Alfred's family.

Words however kind cannot mend your heartache, but those who care and share your loss wish you comfort. May you find strength in the warm embrace of family and friends.
Alfred was a great man and loved by all those who were fortunate to know him. He always had a smile and kind words to everyone.
I will miss you, my brother Alfred, and you will always be remembered.
