NELSON, Walter Richard (Dick)
Peacefully, at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, on Monday, September 9th, 2002, in his 78th year. After a long and courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband to Sadie for 55 years. Loving father of David and his wife Betty of St. Catharines. Dear father-in-law to Sandy of Buffalo. Cherished grandfather of Kristen, Richard, and Michael Nelson of St. Catharines and Dedra of British Columbia. Predeceased by son Donald. Brother of Charlotte Dumbleton of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Russell Nelson and wife Lois of Tonawanda, New York. Predeceased by his sister Evelyn and brothers Donald and Douglas. Survived by numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Dick was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring in 1966. He worked for several years at Hayes Dana, Thorold and with Upper Lakes Shipping, St. Catharines. Special thanks to Dr. Kerley, the nurses and staff at the Palliative Care Unit at the Hotel Dieu Hospital and "Dick" from Hospice Niagara for their care and compassion.
Mr. Nelson is resting at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines until Thursday at 8:30am. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated in St. Alfred's Church (Carlton St. at Vine St.) on Thursday at 9:00am. Cremation to follow. Visitation Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9pm. Vigil Prayers will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association or charity of choice.
