Zau Min Was Not Home, He is Now.
For Anyone who may have been interested or heard of Zau Min, St Catharines, I would like you to know:
Really, he was a good guy.
He was from a country called Burma, now Maynmar. He was some sort of a journlist there in the 1980s, when he ran into to problems with free speech and trying to publish his thoughts. The strict military controlled government jailed him and provided alot of problems, I dont believe he was really able to let go. But was able to eventually escape captivity & his country. His father was able to bring him to Canada. He made a life for himself, the best he could, in St Catharines. He maintained a janitorial job at Brock University for awhile, but ran into Union problems there(his job was not a union job). Knowing him for as long as I did, and realizing now I wish I knew more, I really believe he was very home sick. He wanted to be back in Burma, but because of the political turmoil there, he could not return with his history.
I am sorry to hear the way things ended with him. I really considered him a friend, his father approached me in 1998 and asked if I could help Zaw Min do better in his life. A big part of me feels I failed, but I also feel that his captivity in Burma created serious psychological issues, coupled with his severe homesickness, that lead to his wreckless lifestyle.....
Deep down, Zau Min was a smart man, surely capable of much more, but was really a person or victim of circumstance.
I will miss my friend. We had some good times, and I will keep some good memories. The Man videotaped our Wedding. I wish things would have turned out better......
