Campbell-Asselbergs, Elizabeth Elizabeth (Liz) Campbell Asselbergs passed away Christmas Eve 2003 in the St. Catharines General Hospital, St. Catharines Ontario, after a courageous battle with cancer. Liz was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Edward Asselbergs, in 1996.Liz was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, July 23, 1936, the only daughter of the late Evelyn and Mike (MR) Campbell and was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier and Michigan State Universities, with a MSc in Nutrition. Liz had a distinguished career as a dietician and nutritionist, within Canada and internationally, notably as leader of the first ever Nutrition Canada survey in the 70's and as a specialist in nutritional issues of developing nations with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, Italy. She was a member of several professional Dietetics and Nutrition Associations.In St. Catharines where she made her home for the past 18 years, Liz was very active in charitable, religious and cultural organizations (such as Meals On Wheels, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, President of local chapter of Catholic Womens League, and the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace). She was a board member of the Rodman Hall Arts Centre. Liz sponsored numerous foster children in South America and the Philippines.Liz is survived by her stepdaughters Mieke (Derek) Knight and Joyce (John) Love, both of St. Catharines and stepsons, Robert (Aldith) of New York City, Gary (Nicolet) of Rotterdam, and Peter of Bologna, and 4 grandsons and 4 granddaughters. She is also survived by her brothers John C (Marie) of Sydney, Michael (Annabel) of Ottawa, Hugh (Ann) of Atlanta, and Frank (Beverly) of Ottawa, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Liz was a warm and loving lady who acquired and retained friends from all parts of the world and in all her endeavors. She was an attentive and loving grandmother, aunt, and grand aunt. She will be fondly remembered and missed by a host of dear friends and neighbours in St. Catharines, relatives and other friends that she dearly loved and who gave her such tremendous support and care over the last year. The funeral will be held Monday, December 29th at Star of the Sea Catholic Church in St. Catharines at 10am. Visitation will be at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St., Saturday evening 7-9pm and Sunday afternoon at 2-4pm and Sunday evening at 7-9pm. Interment will be at the Niagara Lakeshore Cemetery.
