Obituary of Martha (Mattie) Stockwell

STOCKWELL, Martha (Mattie) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mattie Stockwell, cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, on August 26, 2004, in Sauble Beach, Ontario, in her 87th year. Dearly beloved wife of the late William Speirs, Bill Stockwell, and Ab Galley. Loving mother of Eleanor (Terry) O'Connor, Mary (Roger) Honsberger, Margaret (Graham) Drennan, Alfred (Mariette) Stockwell, Thomas Stockwell, Laura Ann (Paul) McQuillan, Veronica Stockwell, and Andrew (Anna) Stockwell. Loving step-mother to Lyn (Bruce) Thomas and Roger (Sharon) Galley. Also predeceased by daughter-in-law Deborah and brothers John and George. Her absence will be deeply felt and memories of her forever treasured by her children, step-children, and their families. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Mattie came to St. Catharines as a war-bride in 1946. She was an active member of the Cathedral Catholic Women's League, Canadian Union of Postal Workers, and many other organizations. She wasthe recipient of the Provincial Volunteer award in 2000.Mattie was a wonderful, positive, selfless woman with an incredible spirit and an unending generosity in giving her time and energy to others. She will always be remembered for her commitment, enthusiasm, loving spirit, kindness, and baking.Mattie is resting at the George Darte Funeral Chapel 585 Carlton St. until Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated in the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria Church at 12 noon. Cremation. Visiting hours are Sat. 7-9 p.m. Sunday and Monday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Vigil prayers for Mattie will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the charity of your choice.
