Graeme McLean, Normans nephew posted a condolence
Thursday, November 30, 0002
My uncle Norman is a very special person to me, he was my link to my father, Murdoch, who died too young to allow me to have the kind of relationship a son should have. Norman was able to give me a sense of family and after my visit to him and Marie in 2001, with his guidance I undertook to trace the McLean family history. What many thought was Normans 'old seadog ' stories soon proved to be true as I was able to trace our family line back to 1823 in Aultbea, Wester Ross. Norm was tickled pink that I was able to do this, it gave me a sense of direction as knowing my history allowed me to plan my future easier. I have Norman to thank for this.
I was lucky enough to spend some more time with Norm and Marie towards the end of 2005 and he took my lady, Cath, and I down to the canal to watch a 'laker' go through the locks. It was a vessel he had served on, the 'Nanticoke', and as we watched its progress he told us some of the stories of his time aboard her. He made us cry with laughter that day, but now are tears are with sadness.
God bless you, Norm, you sure had a life that many would envy, you travelled the world so many times and met so many people who grew to like you and your easy manner, you were many things to many people:
a son, a brother, a husband, a stepdad, a shipmate, a neighbour but you were my only uncle and thats unique to you and me. Sail away, old pal and take our blessing and love with you.
Our thoughts with Marie and Chuck and Rob and their families, he will stay in our hearts for what he means to us.
Comhla ri gaol, duine a muir.
