Hergott, Anna Lawley (Cahill)
Died peacefully at the Hotel Dieu-Shaver Hospital with family by her side on February 13, 2006 in her 102nd year. Anna was a lifelong resident of St. Catharines and a member of St. Catharines Cathedral and the CWL of that parish. Anna is predeceased by her husband (Lance Corporal) John (Jack) Hergott, of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment killed in World War II and their baby daughter Mary Elizabeth. Her parents Martin Joseph Cahill Sr. and Hannah Lawley as well as her brother Martin Cahill and sister Elizabeth, Sister St. Christopher of the Sisters of St. Joseph, also predecease her. Dearest cousin of Louis Cahill, loved and cherished by his family: Patricia Waters, Nancy (Neil) Leger, and Denis (Bridget) Cahill. Also survived by relatives in Michigan and Arizona. A sister in law, Justine Hergott and several nieces and nephews of the Hergott family also survive Anna. Anna will be missed by her dear friends Colette Savard and Betty Robertson. Educated in business procedures Anna graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in 1919. Her first job at the age of 14 1/2 was as secretary at the St. Catharines Silk Mill followed by two years in the office of McKinnon Industries. She was a longtime employee of Bissonette & Joy, a prestigious menswear store in downtown St. Catharines, where she worked as secretary treasurer and assistant to Mr. Bissonette. After the death of her husband and baby she managed the offices for two local doctors, Dr. Dean McDonald and Dr. Omer Younghusband. Her last job was with the brokerage firm of Draper-Dobie. Anna retired from Draper-Dobie when she was 68 after being in the workforce for 54 years. As a career woman, Anna was ahead of her time; she was well known and respected in the downtown business community throughout the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Anna's life reflected her abiding faith, her personal strength and independence.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a Funeral Liturgy for Anna on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at St. Catherine's Cathedral at 11 a.m. the family will receive friends at the church on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Funeral arrangements entrusted to George Darte Funeral Home. Memorial Remembrances to a charity of your choice can be made.
