Obituary of Stephanie Haras

Haras, Stephanie At St. Catharines General Hospital on Monday, August 29, 2005 at 83 years of age. Stephanie was predeceased by her beloved husband Taras in 1997. She is survived by her daughter Ola Tkaczyk (husband Jaroslaw) and her son Orest Haras (wife Irene). Dear grandmother of Gregory Tkaczyk (wife Oksana), Natalie Haras, Anna Ochrym (husband Alex), Katyryna Haras and great grandmother of Theodore Ochrym. She is also survived by family in Ukraine. Stephanie was born in Horodenk, Ukraine. She studied engineering at the Lviv Polytechnic Institute until being interrupted by the war. She came to Canada in 1949. From 1957 Stephanie had been a leader in the Ukrainian Community in the Niagara Region. She was instrumental in the formation of the Ukrainian Scouting Association Plast in St. Catharines. She was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League since 1966 where she served in many capacities including president andwas cofounder of the church senior's group and the Artifact Museum. She had also been on the national executive. Stephanie held executive positions in the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and as such has helped to organize the Ivan Kotliarevsky Ukrainian Language High School and was instrumental in establishing the Ukrainian Dunai Dance Ensemble. Stephanie won many volunteer awards, the most notable being the Province of Ontario Volunteer Service Award and the Gold Medal of the Eternal Flame for her community work as a member of Plast. Mrs. Haras is resting at the George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton St. until Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with rite of committal in Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Visiting Hours Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Panachyda will be celebrated in the funeral home on Wednesday 7:30 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in St. Catharines, or the Ukrainian Patriarchal Church in Kiev, Ukraine.
