Obituary of Manford Swanson
Swanson, Manford (Max)
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Manford (Max) Swanson of Pleasant Manor, Virgil announces his passing on Thursday, September 13, 2007 at the age of 91. Left to mourn are his beloved wife Luella, sons Rick (Meredith) and Michael (Judy), step-children Joanne and Allan (Sue). He was the patriarch and "Poppa" to grandchildren Krista, Karena, Adam S., Paula, Jason, Tina, Adam B. and Andrea. Great-grandfather of Oscar, Harriet and Trudeau. Dear uncle to many nieces and nephews, including Jackie and Nick.Dad was born in London, Ontario on May 27, 1916 to Daniel and Elizabeth Swanson. He had a challenging upbringing, being the youngest of six siblings and growing up during the Great Depression. He was fascinated with automobiles and put that interest to work as a driver in the Canadian Army during World War II. After the war he would take the family on long driving vacations, often including his passion of baseball. His idea of a perfect vacation was to drive around Lake Erie taking in games at Detroit and Cleveland. He and his sons would have long debates about how they would handle the Blue Jays if they were the owners.Max was the master of evocative language. His colourful expressions made everyone laugh. Someone was "so cheap he could squeeze the beaver right off the nickel"... or "crazier than a lock-jawed cuckoo". Dad was also a supremely generous man, who worked hard and always made sure his family was well fed, sheltered and clothed. In his later years, he was tenderly cared for by his soul-mate Luella and the staff at Pleasant Manor. There he contributed by distributing church bulletins and playing music for shut-in residents.
Visitation will be held this Saturday, September 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines (905-937-4444).
