Obituary of Laurence (Larry) Bernard Sweeney

Sweeney, Laurence (Larry). It is with great sadness that the family of Larry Sweeney announces his death peacefully at Versa Care Centre on Monday July 10th with family at his side. He was in his 90th year and the beloved husband for 65 years of Yvonne. He also leaves behind his devoted children, Carol (Nick) Kittl, Judy (Ed) Barszcz, Brian (Debbie), Jim (Penny), and Meb (Paul) Smith. Also mourning his death are his loving grandchildren Jim (Lisa), Danielle (Dean), Lara and Julie, Courtney, Jeff, Mandy (Adrian), Kevin, and Marissa and great grandchildren, Shae, Kelsey, Paige, and Lucas. He is survived by brother-in-law, Guy Orsborn, and sisters-in-law, Blanche Pigeon, Sheila Pigeon, Rita Birney and Annette (Mike) Foley. He will also be missed by many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Verna, his brothers, Francis (Jane), and Vince (Marion), and sisters, Mary (Ed) Wood and Marg Orsborn,and sisters and brothers in-law Simone (Morris) Abrams, Omer and Armand Pigeon, and Clarence Birney. Larry was born in Iroquois Ontario, and moved to St. Catharines after his marriage to Yvonne, where he was employed at General Motors for 20 years. He was a founding member of the Auto Workers Credit Union (First Ontario) and was loan manager until retirement. Every year, a bursary at Brock University is given to a worthy student in his name. He also worked for Cumis Insurance until age 65. Besides love for his family, Larry had a great love of music and singing (with his ukulele) and for his Montreal Canadien hockey team. He will be truly missed. The family gives special thanks to Versa Care staff especially South 1 for their loving care. Larry's family will receive friends at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME 585 Carlton Street Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral liturgy will be held at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church on Friday July 14, 2006 at 11 am. Rite of committal in Victoria Lawn Cemetery.
