Obituary of George Henry Shepherd

SHEPHERD, George Henry 1913 - 2008 - passed away peacefully on October 6, 2008 at St. Catharines General Hospital, in his 95th year, to be reunited with his wife Doris Helen (Grewar). George is survived by sons Peter (Linda) of Burlington, David (Carole) of Oakville and Michael (Suzanne) of Ridgeville. Much loved Papa of grandchildren Mari-Lynn (Noel Cordahi), Brad (Roxanne Kwan), Trevor (Christen), Michelle (Joel Race), & John. Also loved by great grandchildren Michael, Dermott, Madelaine, & Henry. George is also survived by brother Donald (St. Catharines) and sister Shirley (Bill Hefler) of Don Mills, and predeceased by brother Charles & sister Elizabeth Jannaway. Sadly missed by Estelle Watton. George was in the wholesale magazine/newspaper business for fifty years when he retired from Seaway News in 1981 as co-owner since inception in 1956. He was a member of the Periodical Distributors of Canada where he was awarded the first shield of recognition for leadership. He was quite often recognized on the streets, by one of his "Liberty Boys" since he worked for Liberty Magazine until he entered the Armed Forces in the early 40's. George was one of the oldest long standing members of Knox Presbyterian Church where he was Clerk of Session, Chairman of the Board, and Church School Superintendent. . He was a dedicated volunteer for the "Out of the Cold" program at the church, as well as tending the flower beds surrounding the church property. He was a "Paul Harris fellow" member and former president of Rotary. He was also a member of St. Catharines Golf & Country Club for 48 years, where he golfed regularly up until last year. George was always a stalwart supporter of community activities being a former member or director of "Y" Men's Club, Gyro Club, Chamber of Commerce, City Centennial, Press Theatre, United Fund and St. Catharines Club. George was an active resident at Anchor Pointe Retirement Home. He just recently moved to Heatherwood Retirement Residence where he spent an enjoyable last four months. George was known for his crusade work for the seniors in his residences. He spearheaded a campaign for a stoplight in front of Anchor Pointe to assist the seniors in crossing Ontario Street, as well as other projects. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL. George has been cremated in accordance with his wishes, with private interment at the cemetery of Louth United Church. A "Celebration of Life" service will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, St. Catharines, at 10:30 a.m. on October 25, 2008. If so desired a donation to your charity of choice would be appreciated
