Obituary of Monsignor Charles Robert Gagne

GAGNE, Monsignor Charles R.- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Monsignor Charles R. Gagne on Friday, March 25th, 2011 at the St. Catharines General Hospital at the age of 89. Beloved brother of Julienne Gale. Loving uncle of Charles Gale and Marie Gale. Cherished Father of Daniel, Kenneth, and the late Randall (Duke). Special grandfather of Danny, Shannon, David, the late Paula, Scott, Richard, Tina, Clinton and Bridgette. Pop will be sadly missed by his daughters in law Karen, Stephanie and Maryann. The son of Joseph Gagne and Lucy Fortier, Monsignor Charles Gagne was born on July 21, 1921 in Senneterre, Quebec. Monsignor studied Theology at St. Augustine†™s Seminary from 1947 to 1951. He was ordained June 1, 1951 in Toronto by his Eminence James C. Cardinal McGuigan. Monsignor Gagne served in several parishes both in the Archdiocese of Toronto and the newly established Diocese of St. Catharines. He served for 31 years as Pastor at Immacul�©e Conception, St. Catharines, from 1964 until 1996. He was named a Prelate of Honour on October 18, 1995. He was the Chaplain for The Knights of Columbus and The Daughters of Isabella. Monsignor Gagne was actively involved in ministry throughout his retirement since 1996. Following his retirement he lived at La Residence in St. Catharines until two years ago when he went to Versa Care. Monsignor Charles was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous from October 21st 1972 until his death. He will be greatly missed by all his loving parishioners. Monsignor Charles Gagne is resting at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines. Visitors will be received on Tuesday from 2-4p.m. & 7-9p.m. Vigil Prayers will take place Tuesday at 8:30p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immacul�©e Conception Church, St. Catharines on Wednesday, March 30th at 11a.m. Rite of Committal at Victoria Lawn Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family.
