Dear Family,
With great sadness did I hear about George†™s passing!
I met George first in Europe when he was the boatman of the Canadian National Rowing Team. He represented rowing at its grass roots and was always there for the athletes. When I came to Canada for the first time in 1991 and visited St. Catharines, he was one of the first that I recognized and he made me feel welcome in his own way. In 1993, he accepted my invitation to act as the boatman for the Provincial Rowing Team that represented Ontario at the Canada. I was then Head Coach of this team and he took care of our boats, starting from bringing them to Kamploops/B.C., looking after them in the best way at the regatta and bringing them safely back to Ontario. The outstanding success of the Ontario was as much to his credit as it was for the whole team.
After this, I met George many times in St. Catharines and something very special will be missed at this site from now on. I have the best memories of George and count me one of the lucky people who were able to get him to know a little better and being on the receiving side of his many services to our sport.
My thoughts are going out to you and I promise to keep George always in high regard.
Sincerely,
Volker Nolte

Kay and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Mooner. We feel blessed to be among the many who have benefited from his
countless acts of generosity. And of course we both have a few of his "pins" that we will cherish. He will be missed at all those regatta's but just imagine his pin collection when we get to the other side !
Sincerely,
Mike and Kay

I worked with Mooner at the St Catharines boathouse maintaining rowing equipment for four summers in the mid-90s. During this time I saw and appreciated the huge heart behind Mooner's sometimes tough exterior. His dedication to the sport of rowing was ceaseless. Some of my fond memories of Mooner include his subtle dry wit, trying to keep him off a ladder two days after hip replacement, and his "bandstand" Sundays. It is difficult for me to quantify how much I learned from Mooner during these summers. I moved to the west coast in the late 90s and continued to repair rowing equipment for a couple of clubs (applying Mooner's tricks of the trade, of course). Whenever I completed a project, I would step back and think if Mooner would say "a blind man would be glad to see that".
Thank you Mooner.

Mooner, we will miss you. I have so many wonderful memories of your kindness over the last 25 years. In '87 in Copenhagen when I was struggling to repair the stern of the US 8. You were there to support and help me even though your primary obligation was to your team. You saw no border, no rivals...only frends in rowing. One time, years later in St. Kitts you brought over a group of kids from the detention center for a work project and I saw you treat them with dignity and respect. These kids, and everyone you met, were worth valuing. When Nancy and I were blessed with our daughter, Lauren, you showered her with affection (and PINS) at every regatta we brought her to. In '99 when the World Champs were in St. Kitts you set up your "trading table" and put Lauren right next to you helping her build the collection that you started for her. Then every year at the Head of the Charles you'd bring her more pins and even a berautiful case you made for her to put them in. You know, dear Mooner, she got a ribbon in our local town fair for her display and the display and ribbon are proudly on display in our family room. You were, and are her lovable Uncle who lived far away. Mooner, I have met a lot of people through rowing but none that touched my and my family as much as you. God bless and good bye. Mike, Nancy and Lauren

Dear Bonnie & family
My deepest sympathy. I was the former program director with the John Howard Society but retired 12 years ago. I lovingly remember Mooner & how wonderful he was to all the intermittent guys & us at JHS. I am diabetic too & mooner & I would laugh about "cheating". He taught me so much about life & wood refinishing. I have many beatuiful antiques redone thanks to his help. They are wonderful memories of him in my home & have been for a long time. Anytime I needed help with keeping household jobs fixed he'd always advise me how or who to get. I love Mooner & so did my daughter Laura Hogan. Mooner mentored with her & his rowing passion. He & Craig are united now. Peace be with you Bonnie. Love & prayers Debbie xoxoxox
