Obituary of Gordon Canough
CANOUGH, Gordon (Captain) Passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday January 26, 2008 at Hotel Dieu Shaver. Beloved husband of Annette for 47 years. Loving father of sons Robert Terry (Marguerite) of Ottawa and Kevin Charles. Grandfather of Daniel, Jeremie, Jacob and Megan. Survived by his sister Ruth (Simeon) Langevin of Massena N.Y. Predeceased by brothers Harry (Helen), Allen (Elaine), and Neil (Carmen). Gordon worked as a Mariner for 45 years. After sailing as a ship's Captain for five years he became employed as a marine pilot in 1965 by the Great Lakes Pilotage Authority until retiring in 1991. Until his passing, he was a member and past president of the Cooperation of Professional Great Lakes Pilots. In 1980 he was appointed by the Minister of Transport as a member of the board of directors of the GLPA until 1996. He served in the armed forces from 1944 - 1946. He was active in the community and an active member of St. Julia's Church. Friends and family will be received at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St., on Wednesday January 30 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated from St. Julia Catholic Church on January 31 at 10:00 a.m. Vigil prayers will be held on Wednesday at 3:00p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. Catharines General Hospital, or Hotel Dieu Shaver.
