Dear Lesley and family;
We just heard about the loss of your father. When I think of your father it always brings a smile to my face, maybe because everytime I talked with him or saw him, he always had one himself. The loss of any loved one is very difficult, and I cannot imagine what you are going through right now. We would like to send our deepest condolences to you and your family at this time. We will remember your dad and your family in our prayers.

Up until the past four or five years, anytime I thought of my dad the images of a strong, fun, determined man came to mind. As you probably heard from Uncle Bert and my mom, Dad was born with Spinal Bifida and had various medical problems resulting from this, including the loss of his toes on his right foot due to his poor circulation. But as a kid and even young adult I never understood the severity of his condition because Dad did not let it overcome him. I think he actually was such a physical presence because of it, like he was proving to everyone that it wasn't going stop him. Dad taught me various sports, swimming, soccer, baseball, even boxing. He never said I couldn't do something because I was a girl! He taught me to do things for myself, change a tire, maintenance of the house, planting and taking care of a garden, the pool maintenance. He even explained how the gears worked when he was teaching me how to drive. Growing up there wasn't anything Dad couldn't do (except spell). Even when his back forced him to leave his job, he still managed to do stuff around the house, just in his own time. But he never gave up - and that was what he taught me - NEVER GIVE UP.
As people will see from the photographs we collected, Dad was always playing around witht he children. We used to have such fun in the pool, having races, diving from his shoulders, trying to knock each other off the various rafts and rings. Even when he became a grandad, he was the one who got a kick out of playing with the grandkids, and they all loved playing with him. He wasn't one of these grandparents who sit and watch the kids, telling them to keep it down or sit still - he was enticing them to climb higher in the tree, have races in the pool, play hide and seek around the house, or make a fort downstairs using all the pillows and blankets they could find. He even made it fun for any kid to work around the house with him because he would show you how to do it, and then take pride in the work after it was done. If there was one thing Dad didn't like it was laziness. I know I can be stubburn, and I probably get that from Dad, but he also taught me to always do your best, try your hardest.
So when I remember my Dad I will remember a good person who with pride and determination taught me how to be a good person. Dad, I will always miss you.
Love forever,Lesley
