Obituary of Msgr. John J. Cartwright

CARTWRIGHT, Rev. Msgr. John J. "Jack" Peacefully at Extendicare in St. Catharines on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Beloved son of the late Helen (nee O'Boyle) and Jack Cartwright. Predeceased by his brother Tom and his sister-in-law Gloria. He will be dearly missed by his sister Mary (John) Scanlon as well as his cousins, nieces, nephews and many loyal friends and priestly fraternity in the Diocese of St. Catharines, where he served faithfully and unselfishly for over 55 years. Msgr. Cartwright served in the St. Catharines Diocese at various parishes throughout the Niagara Region, most recently serving at St. Denis Church and in his retirement, stayed at St. Alfred's Church. He will be missed by the residents and staff of Extendicare that he called home for the past 4 years. The family wishes to express our sincerest thanks to the loving staff, caregivers and doctors who took great care of Msgr. Cartwright. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated in St. Alfred's Church, 272 Vine St. on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at 12:00 p.m. The Rite of Committal to follow in the priests' plot at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St. on Monday, January 5, from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., then in St. Alfred's Church on Tuesday, January 6, from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. and on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. Vigil prayers will be offered in St. Alfred's Church on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a gift to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or to the St. Alfred's "Out of the Cold" program would be appreciated.
