Obituary of Stephanie Oczkowski
OCZKOWSKI, STEPHANIE ( January 31,1923 - March 5, 2010 ).
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we, Christine and Andrew, announce the passing of our beloved mother on Friday, March 5, 2010. She leaves us behind as well as her much loved daughter-in-law, BrendaJoy. Daughter of the late Jadwiga and Tadeusz Lenkiewicz, sister of the late Witold Lenkiewicz, the late Marysia Slyz, and a twin sister who died at birth. It was her wish to die peacefully at home, and that wish, thankfully, was granted. Stephanie suffered very much over the last number of years but through her tremendous determination and immense will, she made sure she stayed around to help our lives be the best. Her great generosity and love for family was so much a part of her such that she ( with her husband, the late Casimir Oczkowski ) brought his brothers from Poland in the 60's, her nephew in the 80's, and, even in her later years, her great niece so they could build better lives in Canada. She will be fondly remembered and missed by nephew Jan Lenkiewicz ( Ania ) and their children Daniel, Victoria, and Veronica as well as great niece Mariola Muklewicz Czarniak ( Tom ). Will be greatly missed by her niece Teresa Muklewicz ( Mirek ) & family, Dominik Slyz ( Barbara ) & family, and Tadeusz Slyz ( Marysia ) & family, and the family of the late Lucyna Klubowicz , all of Poland. Also remembered by Phyllis Komendant & family, brother-in-law John Oczkowski, nephew Wes Oczkowski & family, niece Yolanda Oczkowski & family, goddaughter-niece Barbara Cassidy & family, sister-in-law Stephanie Oczkowski, and Rick Oczkowski & family.
Stephanie had a hard life having to leave home at 16 during World War II to work in Germany, then escaping to Denmark, and finally coming to Canada with the help of her cousin, Charles Komendant. She worked very hard her entire life and spent her working years at the Hotel Dieu Hospital. There she made many friends with whom she stayed in contact even after retiring in 1985. Even to the end, she enjoyed all of her friends, neighbours and anyone she met.
She will be missed by all who knew her.
