My time with coach Joe
My name is Dennis McGlynn. I am 59 years old and live in Laguna Beach California. I lived in St Catherines when I was 8-12 years old. Coach Joe was my coach the entire time. He was the best coach I ever had and I still have great memories of him. I remember riding in the back of his Volkswagen beetle driving all over Ontario to swim meets. He really knew how to motivate a 10 year old. One time I set a national record and thought I was pretty cool and started to "loaf" at practise. That was in the 20 yard pool at the YMCA. Coach Joe took me into the "loafers" lane and kicked my butt. I broke my own record about 5 times that night. He was a great man and a great coach. I will remember him always. So sorry for your loss.

To the Kerkhoven family:
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have many fond memories of Joe on deck, traveling with our team, or doing turn sessions in our backyard pool. Joe taught me how to work and that work ethic has helped me in both my athletic and professional career. I always recall Joe as a tough but fair coach who provided great motivation to stay out of the "meatball" lane. I still remember the mind grinder sets and I have dug out my old log books to share some comments from Joe. I think these quotes really describe his character and commitment to swimming and his athletes.
"That was a real good effort. I will be challenging you a lot more from now on. Make sure that you don't fail. Anything is possible."
"Jane, I am firmly convinced, that it takes unbelievable determination on my part to keep on demanding better than excellence. I am critical, but I also realize that it is virtually impossible for an athlete to perform perfectly all the time."
I wish you many fond memories to reflect upon.

My deepest condolences to Phylis Robert Irene and the rest of the family. I always remember Joe fondly, he served as a great example to us all, his tireless energy and enthusiasm for both as a coach as with life, have benefited us all.
His presence on the pool deck I still carry with me to this day, as with his zest for story telling and uses of the terms "hamburgers & hotdogs" were legendary. On looking back, I find I still use to this day many of Joe's positive attributes.
Again, deepest sympathies to Joe's family.

We were looking forward to see our Oom Joop and Robbert this summer in the Netherlands. It's approximately 6 years ago that we saw each other, when he was also with Robbert in the Netherlands. Both of my daughters (Babs en Lotte) met him then. It would have been tremendous if uncle Joop could have seen them again an also my just born son Jurre. The distances between Canada and the Netherlands is large and therefore we saw eachtother to little, but uncle Joop and the family in Canada are always in our minds. Therefore this feels as a large loss. Uncle Joop was my Godfather and that made him a special Uncle for me. I carry his name †œJohannes adrianus† with pride. We wish aunt Phylis, Robbert and Irene and their children all the best and strength. I hope we keep in contact.

Dear Phylis, Irene and Rob,
I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. Henry called tonight to tell me. I am sorry I missed the visitation tonight and I am not able to attend the service tomorrow but I will be there in thought and heart. Being part of the St. Catharines swim club was such a huge part of our family life and Joe was of course the centre of all those memories. I called Tommy and Mom and Dad to let them know as well and they send their sympathy to all of you. Tommy commented that he so often thinks of Joe and was in fact just thinking about him the other day. I don't know if you knew that Tommy coached a swim team outside Barry when his girl's were younger and all the things Joe taught us about dedication, practice, determination and inspiring young people to strive for excellence were part of that. It never mattered with Joe as your coach if you were a star or struggling to make your times, he worked with us all, pushed us all and was proud of us all. It was wonderful for me to find Joe beaming at me from the audience of the Curtain's Up Production shows over the last number of years. As always he was so encouraging and proud. Thank goodness I sing better than I swam! Phylis and Irene, it was so good to see you there and I hope I will this year again. Joe had a huge influence on all his swimmers and will be very sadly missed.

I was deeply saddened and felt a profound sense of loss when I heard of Coach Joe†™s passing. I had the privilege of being coached by, working alongside of, and most importantly getting to know Coach Joe as a friend during the Perfect Fit program at White Oaks. I could not have predicted that over the course of the program, the conversations that we would have and the lessons that he would teach me would have changed my life in a way that can†™t adequately be put into words. Unless you had the privileged of knowing him and speaking to him, it is hard to truly understand how much he genuinely cared for those he coached and how much passion he had for what he did.
Although never far from my mind, I had lost touch with Coach Joe recently and had been meaning to contact him to let him know how I was doing. Sometimes you don†™t realize just how much someone has impacted your life until some time has passed, and I now regret not having caught up with Joe recently to thank him for all that he did for me and to let him know that I thought of him often.
A year and a half ago when I was packing to move to England to study, one of the last things I put in my carryon luggage was a card Coach Joe wrote to me on my 16th birthday, almost 9 years ago now. It read:
†œDear Stefanie... It is far better to dare mighty things, to win fantastic triumphs, even though chequered by failures, than to rank yourself with those poor people who neither enjoy much nor suffer much. They live in the grey twilight that knows no victory, nor defeat. Your friend, Joe.†
I am very sorry that I cannot be there in person to celebrate Coach Joe†™s life, but I will be thinking of him and all those he meant so much to. If I close my eyes I can still picture Joe pulling out his day planner and putting me in for our next session, or driving alongside me in his pickup truck helping me to prepare for my first race. His bright blue eyes, big smile, kind heart, and wisdom and passion for life will not soon be forgotten.
With deepest sympathies during this difficult time,
Stefanie Dringus

Dear Phylis, Rob, and all of Joe's family.
I was very sorry to hear of Joe's passing today. He was a wonderful man, so full of life, and I remember him with great fondness and affection. Joe was my swim coach when I swam with the Badgers from 1990 through 1995. His knowledge and experience, along with his outgoing personality, helped me develop as a person, and athlete, and, later, as a coach and teacher.
Joe always had a story (none of them dull,) many of which I still recall due largely to the fact that he could tell them so well. He was a story-teller, and that is a very special gift - one that I and many others have benefited from and appreciated over his many years of coaching. He was so well-liked in life, and he will be missed greatly.
Once again, I'm very sorry for this news and my thoughts, along with those of my family, are with all of you.
Sincerely,
Nick Lezetc

Dear family,
We want to send you all our condolences
We haven't been in contact for a long, long time. The picture of uncle Joop is exactly the way I will always remember him. With the twinkle in his eyes! Very positive.
I was looking out to meet Joop this summer. Actually John Roodvoets and I talked about arranging a nice event a few month ago. It didn't go that way. Unfortunately. We wish you a lot of strength in the coming time and we hope you can give this great loss a place.

Dear Family,
Please be assured ,,Oom Joop`´ is sadly missed here in the Netherlands as well.
We were happy to visit Joop and you all, two and half years ago and had a splendid holiday, where coach Jo took over with kind instructions to our almost grown up kids!
Having family in Canada means a lot to us it is always a mix off excitement and adventure flying so far away but realising you will see faces with a lot of familiarity both in carracter and looks (the Kerkhoven Nose is famous on both side of the Ocean !)
We wish you all the best and are thinking of you , We all say Good Bay Oom Joop.

My first memory of uncle Joop.
My first memory of uncle Joop is a spoken message dated 1956 from Canada on a long play record, accompanied by his own piano music.
Uncle Joop said to be glad with his new nephew Hanny and corrected this with his new niece Hanny.
As a child I thought this slip of the tongue marvellous and it never left my mind.
Oom Joop, rust in vrede.(Rest in peace.)

Coach
Joe had a huge influence in my life.
I came to him in 1961 from the Merritton summertime swimming program when Joe was coaching the St. Catharines Y Swim Team.
For the first time in my life I was swimming and competing all year round with an experienced coach.
Joe was tough but fair and always had a twinkle in his eye, even when he was yelling at me. He was exactly what I needed at that stage in my life.
Joe helped me reach my potential as a swimmer which, among other things, allowed me to get a swimming scholarship and be a member of a number of Canadian swimming teams including the 1972 Olympic Team.
I couldn't have done it without Joe.
Thanks Joe and my condolences to Joe's family.

Coach Joe...Always recruiting great athletic talent
One of my best memories of Joe is the day he met his new Granddaughter for the first time. Joe picked up Carling who was only a few days old, turning her around and inspecting her from head to toe. Carling had these very long and skinny feet. As an Olympian swimmer & lifelong swim coach, Joe was always interested in great athletic talent. He held up both of Carling's feet and shouted out to the world, "Well it looks like we have another swimmer in the family! Look at the size of these feet!" Joe was a loving and supportive Grandfather to both Carling and his grandson Sean. He provided wisdom, strength and knowledge and has left a positive imprint on his family forever.

Our deepest Condolences to Phyliss, Irene, Robert and the rest of the familyin this sad time from Mary and Herb de Bray.
Joe was a friend, coach and mentor to many, particularly in swimming where he and I spent countless hours on the pool deck across the country and around the world.
Many athletes and coaches will feel Joe's loss of presence but will remember all the valuable tools he gave them to succeed at sport and at life.
We are hopping to see many of his past proteges over this week-end where we can share Joe's exploits of the many years he was with us.
