Dear Brian and Family:
I am so shocked to hear about the passing of your father. I unfortunately did not find out in time to attend any of the services. Vey was an amazing man who has helped so many girls learn to play the game of softball. He always had a smile on his face no matter where you saw him, the ball park, the bowling alley or the DSBN. Vey will be missed and we all need to give a little more to our community in his memory. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Cindy Crosbie

Brian, Steph and Family:
I am so sorry to hear of the sudden loss of your father and grandfather. Vey had the friendliest attitude and biggest smile of anyone who ever graced Optimist park! Spending all my summers there meant sharing many laughs with Mr. Mellish! He knew all our names, all our parents names..and even made a few jokes when he noticed one of our "boyfriends" sitting in the stands. I remember one year I won an award at the end of the year ceremony and Vey said the nicest things about me. When I went up to get the award, he gave me a big hug and told me that he was proud of me. I remember that day so vividly. Having someone like Vey tell you he was proud of you meant more than he probably ever knew! Vey was a role model to so many young men and women, I will always remember him with respect and admiration.
I know you are suffering and hurting, but please know that you were blessed to have shared your life with such a loved and well respected man. I am thinking of you and praying for you. God Bless.
With my deepest sympathies and condolences,
Cindy Sullivan & family

Our thought's and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. Your dad always could put a smile on our faces when we saw him, and that was usually at a ball diamond watching either the teams or Brian umpire. The relationship between a father and his son, so special as the one you two had will never be replaced. But he will still be there watching when you look over to see.

I am deeply saddened by your loss and hope your fond memories will help you to get through this difficult time. He obviously has impacted many people in a positive fashion through out his life.

I grew up playing softball at Grantham Optimist. One year Vey helped out with the Opti-Mrs. all star team. He was such a kind and gentle man. After that I would periodically go to the Optimist either as a high school coach or to cheer on my nieces. It seems that Vey was always there volunteering his time to make the event successful. He greeted me with a smile and kind words and he always remembered who I was. I will certainly miss my visits with Vey and the Optimist has really lost one of its golden stars. I send my condolences to the family during this very difficult time and I wanted you to know just how loved your father/grandfather was.

Steph, Brian, and Sandy,
I'm remembering how he squeaked me in for another of year of play even when I was too old (surely knowing I was no threat), or how I'm pretty sure that he let the cards fall in our favour so that we could play together, or how he supported and cheered me on in the non-ball aspects of my youth. He was a wonderful man that any kid knew they could go to for help or just some harmless teasing. The community has lost an exemplary and devoted steward and I'm sure that loss pales in comparison only to the loss that you feel for your very very loved-one. My heart is with you as you go through these difficult times. xoxo Shavonne

Dear Brian and family: I was so shocked to hear about your Dad passing away so suddenly. We had the great opportunity to see him a few weeks ago at the Optimist Club and he looked so handsome in his official Optimist suit--I even "flirted" with him and told him how handsome he looked without his shorts and T-shirt. We will always have wonderful memories of your Dad--from the time our daughter Sammy was a 3 year old coming to the board office with me to drop work off, we would stop and chat with Vey and he would always have a treat for her and she would joke around with him and looked forward to our visits with him. Then when she got a couple of years older, she came to play ball and Vey was always around to cheer her on and always had time to sit and chat with the moms as we watched the girls play. Most recently, when Sammy won an award, Vey was there with his fellow Optimist friends to host the families who came to accept their awards and he still remembered to ask how the family was doing. We will all miss seeing his smiling face at the ball park on those warm summer nights and every time someone hits a home run, I am sure Vey will be up in heaven cheering. Rest in Peace Vey, we will miss you. The Vlaar family

Brian, Sandy and Steph...We ran into Bill McMahon and his wife on Friday night at the Brampton Torch Relay and were shocked and saddened at the news of Vey's condition and the projected short time he had left...Vey was one of the good people to have been in our lives...he brought an enthusiasm for life that was unparalleled...his love and interest in slo-pitch was a testament to his shining star - you Brian! It was obvious that his love of the slo-pitch game was equal to his pride in watching you being the best at what you do! The glow of his smile will live on in the piercing of your eyes and your friendly banter on the diamonds.
Losing a parent, though inevitable, is never an easy thing. I am happy to have known Vey in my lifetime, though I never got to know him near enough. But I am even more happy to have gotten to know the best of what he was through my friendship with you. You are a great guy, and Sandy and Steph equally great in having had a man like Vey to be a mentor and father figure to a wonderful family.
Lynn and I continue to keep you all in our thoughts and prayers and from our perch in Brampton offer whatever is needed by you and your family in these trying times.

So sorry to have lost a great neighbor. Vey was always a friendly neighbor from the day we moved onto this street. He never complained about the parties that go on or the noise from all the children when we had the daycare here. He always had a smile and a wave and time to chat about how things are for our family. Brian, he will be missed by those who took the time to get to know him, and for those who didn't take the time it is their loss.
