Mike and I shared a lot of good times together. The pain and sorrow of losing him are still fresh and will never completely diminish. Still, today (Thanksgiving Day), I can't help but feel thankful for the gift of having Michael John Woods be part of my life. As I mentioned in my condolences, Mike brought so many gifts to our lives (figuratively and literally). It's impossible to mention all of them here, but I would like to share those that are foremost in my thoughts these days.
the gift of song …..mike loved to play and sing along with Engelbert records. When he found out I enjoyed them too, he gave me all his doubles(mostly vinyl), so I could learn them and enjoy them on my own, he even gave me a turntable to play them on. Eventually he sold me a small amp(cheap) and gave me one of his microphones. We'd take turns belting out our favourites as best we could (better for him). I recently started my third season with St. Julia's choir where I sing with my Dad and about 40 other very talented individuals, I've performed several solos, and I count it as one the best things to happen to me, ever. And I know it would never have come to pass if it weren't for singing along with Mike and his guitar, whether it was Engelbert or Ozzy. Thanks Mike!
The gift of Jasper.....Our beloved dog and faithful friend(1997-2008). Just happened to mention to Mike one day that I wanted a puppy. Not long after that he called and gave me Lyle's number and the rest is history. What a great dog he was. Thanks Mike!
Last year I was just starting to roof my house and Mike came by, saw that I was struggling without a clue, He showed me the easy way and even stayed and helped me get the first side up, It was easy after that, but without him I'd probably still be up there. Thanks Mike!
Engelbert Live . I'm not a big concert goer so It's not likely that I would ever have gone to see Engelbert if it weren't for Mike who bought my ticket with the agreement that I drive us up to Rama for the show. I loved it. We went back twice more after that. Thanks Mike!
He helped me paint my house and fence just for something to do. Thanks Mike!
He did stone and brickwork for me. Thanks Mike!
He shared his Scottish history and favorite recipes with me. Like Scottish sausage patties, (the square ones from Goeman's) fried with lots of blackpepper and topped with HP, on a onion bun. Or mince and tatties. And let's not forget french fry 'samwiches'. Just butter two pieces of bread and top with fries however you like them YUMMY! Thanks Mike!
He told me about fishcrisp. Thanks Mike!
He picked out a guitar for me and tried to teach me how to play it! Thanks Mike!
He gave and gave and gave. Thanks Mike!
He called me Friend. Thanks Mike!
I could go on!

Our hearts go out to Woodsy's family at this sad time. Everyone we know has a funny story or remembrance of him, sitting around a fire, playing guitar, Gord remembers Woodsy as the only other guy who liked Englebert (or admitted it anyway) He will surely be missed by many!

Well Woodsy i cant believe your gone. I figured we knew each other about 28 years. It all started out bmx riding together, then basically riding our bikes to Niagara Falls every night of the summer. Then i got a car, and yes i would pick you up for school every day, drive you home, then to work, and then pick you up from work. I think we pretty much saw every band in concert together, hit every bar together and were basically inseparable. Woodsy i just wish i could see you one more time to say goodbye!

Our deepest sympathy to Woodsy's family in their time of sorrow. We will always remember him for his funny stories or humming one of his favourite songs while he worked with Lizzie close by his side. He was a great guy and there isn't anything he wouldn't have done to help someone. Woodsy thank you for the awesome stone work you did on our fireplaces. We will always have that to remember you by. You have touched the lives of so many with your kindness and incredible talents and we are grateful to have had you as our friend. We will miss you. May you rest in peace. I am very saddened by the news I heard today. Of course memories came rushing back of a guy that I once loved. A guy that used to live on tomatoe soup, loved Englebert, Randy Rhoades and even gave me his Randy Rhoades jacket....which I wish I still had :( I have memories of him playing guitar like a pro, dancing with a lamp shade on his head and the lathering his hair full of shampoo in an avondale store - just to make me laugh. He was so full of life and definately was taken away from us way too soon. I will cherish my memories of him forever and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. May your memories last a life time xo

From my family to yours, we send our deepest sympathies. Myself, my wife and my two girls adored him. When we would sit down and jam, time stood still and nothing else mattered. He had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. We spent many nights, behind our house, by the fire, playing guitar over a few beers. He would belt out his favourite Elvis and Engelbert songs, and we would sit in awe of his incredible talent. Those were special nights that we will treasure forever. Lizzie would roam the backyard, Woodsy would point out ways he could fix up our house for us, and we would just loose track of time together. He was a kind, magical, gentle, peaceful and generous soul who is going to be very sadly missed by the Mathieson house. He sang at our wedding (Laura's grandma was a big Engelbert fan) and remained a true friend over the years. We will never forget those kind blue smiling eyes and his songs that will remain in our heart forever. We are all better people for knowing him. We love you Woodsy, thank you for being a part of our lives.
