Dear Family,
After returning from Florida this spring, I recently learned of Michael's passing. This news was very sad to me as I remember Michael being such an outstanding student and kind person. I had the pleasure of being his science teacher at NDSS. I send my sincere sympathy to your family. Some people accomplish so much in so few years. He was an wonderful student and person and will be remembered by all who knew him. May happy memories sustain you all at this difficult time.
sincerely,
Susan Weaver

Words to a Brother
I can still remember the day you were born. I was 3 and spent the day with our aunt at the airport watching the planes takeoff and land. Then we stopped at a toy store and I stared a sea of stuffed animals, in order to find just the right one. After that, it was off to the hospital to meet you for the first time; and there you were; Michael Andrew McDonald, my little brother.
It was then and there that I took the oath that all big brothers take; the oath to guide you, protect you, and to ensure you become far better than I. Witnessing the man you have become, there was no greater feeling of pride, then to know I had succeeded. It has to be said however, that often I found it hard to be a role model for you. How could I be a role model, when I spent so much time idolizing you? Your courage and conviction, your senses of duty and justice, and your compassion and unbiased approach to life were truly enviable.
And yet now, I now find myself seeking direction as if trapped in Dante†™s Inferno. †œAt one point midway on our path in life, I came around and found myself now searching through a dark wood, the right way blurred and lost.† I am left feeling hollow; a man incomplete, now lacking such a key component of what makes me the person that I am.
The only fleeting comfort; is the knowledge that I got witness first hand, and participate in the legacy you leave behind, a legacy far beyond someone of your years. Your innate ability to impact and change the lives that surrounded you; this was truly your gift to the world. You saw promise and opportunity where no one else could. You saw more in men, than they themselves could have ever dared dream. For this the world and I, will be forever grateful.
†œI sought my soul, but my soul I could not see. I sought my God, but my God eluded me. I sought my brother and I found all three.† Nothing could summarize a brothers bond better.
Love you and carry you always!
Your Big Brother
Ian

Cousin, although our lives had taken us far apart we always managed to just pick up right where we had last left off (like old buddies, not just family). I admired you and knew that you could have any life that you chose. We will miss you so very much. I wish that my daughters were able to grow up with you in their life. To Aunt Karen & Uncle Bill...no words can make you feel anything right now so I will not make a failed attempt. Please know that we are thinking of you. Actions speak louder than words to show we care, so although I/we could not be present for this we will visit you in the coming months when things are quiet and you need family and warmth around you both. So much love, the "western" Baker's. †œOnly the good die young† Billy Joel, 1977.

Never Forgotten
I first met you playing hockey in our home town of Niagara On The Lake where we instantly became friends both on and off the ice. You led our team to several championships and helped produce one of the greatest teams this town has ever seen. Your dedication and hard work on the ice never went unnoticed, you led by example and everyone else followed which in turn led to our success. In the year 2000 we graduated from separate elementary schools but were soon reunited at Niagara District. We spent the next 4 years together creating some of the most memorable moments in our lives. You encouraged me to take courses that were out of my league, but helped me every step of the way just so we could have class together. I was always amazed by how smart you were, one of the most intelligent individuals I have ever met, and I idolized you for it. Once again we graduated and moved on to University. You attended Guelph, while I stayed home and went to Brock, but the distance never separated us, as you would come home or I would drive up to visit. We spent our summers together doing random things with our group of friends, the tightest group of friends anyone could ever ask for. Whether it was playing baseball at the park, swinging golf clubs on the course or heading up north to a cottage, we always did it together. This past summer, in particular, was hands down the greatest one we have ever experienced. We decided to put a baseball team together, but had no idea what to expect because none of us had ever played before with the exception of you and my dad. After each game we could hardly wait to play again and spent the entire week talking about it. You drove down from Burlington every single Tuesday just to play ball and be with the boys. Once again your dedication and hard work led our team to a championship, who would have thought that a bunch of hockey players from Niagara could play ball too. I still remember the catch you made at second base for the last out to send our team to the finals. We were all so amazed that you were able to stretch out and make that game saving grab.
We shared many of the same interests, like our addiction to sports betting and our obsession with Eminem. Two summers ago we drove to Montreal to watch him perform with Clint and Bill. The four of us had an unbelievable weekend, one that we will never forget. I still look at my phone everyday waiting for you to ask me who I†™m taking this weekend. We loved making bets and talking about our picks, even though I didn†™t always share them with you. This weekend the Ravens upset the Patriots and will play the 49ers in the Superbowl. I remember you saying the Ravens would win it all, so I†™ll be cheering for them on Superbowl Sunday.
Every night I lie in bed and listen to Miranda Lamberts song †œOver You† and cry for the entire 4 minutes and 14 seconds because I know that I will never get over you. Words can†™t express what you mean to me, you were so much more than just a team mate and friend, you were a brother that would do absolutely anything for the greater good of someone else. I could always talk to you about any problems I had and you were always there to listen and offer advice. I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart for everything that you have done and for all the memories you have given me, but most of all I want to thank you for being you, you truly are one of a kind and Springsteen said it best…They built the Titanic to be one of a kind, but many ships have ruled the seas, They built the Eiffel Tower to stand alone, but they could build another if they please, Taj Mahal, the pyramids of Egypt, are unique I suppose, but when they built you brother, they broke the mold. I will miss absolutely everything about you, but I know that you†™re watching over me and I can†™t wait until we meet again. You are forever in my heart and always on my mind. I love you Mike

It was very upsetting to hear about Mike from Linda. Still in shock. You hear about these accidents, but never think it will hit close to home. Mike was far too young. I can't imagine what you are going through, but we are truly thinking of you and hoping that in the future the pain will somewhat ease but never will it go away. Unfortunately, we are unable to attend Mike's vistation, but will be thinking of you with heavy hearts, as you go through this difficult time. Mike has become a very special angel, and surrounded by those who love him. Please take care of yourselves as Mike would not wish to see you suffering, even though this will be very difficult. Love to all of you - Cousins, Brad, Sandra, Brandon & Bradey

Words are never easy to say at this very difficult time. To Bill and Karen, it sounds like Mike was a super person, just like the two of you. Although we never met Mike personally, we do know from family members, he was a very talented, and exceptionally loved young man, who will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched. Please know that we are deeply sorry for your sudden loss. A very special angel is now watching over you

Mike truly was an amazing man. He was an accomplished musician and academic. He was funny and laid back, yet very meticulous and calculated when it came to certain things. But what defined him in my eyes was how genuinely and deeply he cared for and loved my friend Laura. Their love for each other was so pure and honest, it was obvious to anyone around them. He would do anything to make her happy and she was happy just to be with him. Mike, you took such great care of my girl and I know that now as her guardian angel you will always be watching out for her - and I promise that I will be here to help get her through this. You will forever live in our heart Mikee. xo

Undoubtedly, the nicest, funniest, and most genuine person! We immediately clicked with Mike when meeting him through our neighbour and through jam night at Squirrely's. Great musical talent and he never let you sit alone - always made sure everyone was having a great time! And, of course, his unspeakable joy and love for Laura. We will miss him dearly but will always feel grateful that we had the gracious opportunity to have met him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, Laura, and his many dear friends......
