Obituary of Donald James Pickston
PICKSTON, Donald "Don"
Passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 2nd at the Welland Hospital at the age of 81.
Much loved husband of Lily (nee Torjusen) and caring father of Barbara (Pat) Wynne, Sandra (Gary) Enskat, David Pickston, Allan (Lorna) Pickston, Lesley Terry and Jason (Shanaz) Pickston. Loving Grandpa of Shaun, Adam and Jeremy Wynne, Jordan and Kathryn Enskat, Alyssa Pickston, Cameron and Matthew Terry and Rebecca Pickston. Also survived by his sister Olive (the late Ken) Williamson of St. Thomas, as well as 2 great grandchildren.
Don, a retired public school principal, was born on October 24th, 1931, in St. Thomas, Ontario to Jim and Doris Pickston. His high school yearbook indicated, he was destined to be an educator from an early age. His ambition...."Principalship in a school near Ottawa". Instead he found himself in Goose Bay, Labrador where he met and married Lily Torjusen. They enjoyed 58 years together. After moving to the Niagara region, Don spent over 30 years as a tireless educator, mentoring and counselling countless students, before retiring to enjoy his peaceful country property. Not one for "porch sitting" he renewed his passion for photography and began a research project on the history of Power Glen.
He was an always present and devoted father to 6 lucky children, spending many a weekend on some sort of hike, camping trip, or the always popular marshmallow roast in the back yard. If you needed someone to teach you to drive, bail you out of a "situation", swim after runaway boats, or flush out rogue turkeys, Dad was the go-to guy.
He leaves behind a legacy of countless memories and will be dearly missed.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place.
Mr. Pickston's family will receive visitors at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines on Friday, December 7th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
