Obituary of Sarah "Sadie" McWhirter

McWhirter, Sarah “Sadie” (nee Shaw)

September 22, 1934 – April 9, 2019

Passed away peacefully, with her loving family by her side, at N.H.S.-St. Catharines Site. Sadie is sadly missed by John, her devoted husband of almost 54 years. Loving Mum to Elaine (John O’Flaherty), and very proud Nana of Katharine and Madelene. Beloved sister of Margaret (Brian Dunn). Predeceased by brothers John, Davie and Isaac and niece Sandra. Cherished Aunt of Marie (Dave), Trisha (Martin), David (Dee), Anne (Les), Margaret (Robert), John (Elaine) and David; Great Aunt of Chris, Michael, Pam, Megan, Owen, Ashley, Hayley, Kelly, Ryan and Donna. Great-Great Aunt to many other nieces and nephews.

Sadie immigrated to Canada in 1963, from Burnbank Scotland. She met her future husband, John, while working at Port Weller Dry Docks. She spent most of her career at The Right House, and later at Nygard. She was a longstanding member of the Scottish Club and parishioner of St. Alfred Church.

The family would like to thank the staff at the St. Catharines Hospital, especially Jenn and Suzanne, for their kindness and care during this difficult time. Visitation will take place at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines, on Friday, April 12, 2019 from 7-9 p.m. with Vigil Prayers being held at 7:15 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Alfred Church, 272 Vine St., St. Catharines, on Monday, April 15, 2019 at 11 a.m. Cremation will take place at a later date. For those who wish, gifts of remembrance may be made to The N.H.S.-St. Catharines Site or the Melanoma Network of Canada.
