I came to Collegiate in 1984. I was an odd, creative & imaginative kid. I was extremely bullied. Somehow I managed to get permission to take “Theatre Arts” in grade 9, though it was a grade 10 class. I walked in to the black room in the basement next to the football team and found home. PJ gave me support and belief that I hadn’t known before. Theatre became my world. I was engrossed in the Theatre Guild my entire 5 years of high school. PJ gave me nothing but support and confidence. I have since become lucky enough to have a cherished friendship with one of his colleagues, Bob Canham, and we have spoken much of what a great man Peter was. I went on to have a brief career in Theatre but more inportantly I achieved a degree in “ Drama in Education “, I say that because PJ was not training actors, he was gifting young people with ways to live. I wouldn’t have done so without him. THANK YOU PJ LANNON, and my greatest sympathies to your family.
On a lighter note he would often say, “Oh Scott you’re a queer fellow” and I would tell him, you can’t say that. He would laugh and say, “ Give me a break, I just learned not to say I feel gay today”. A grand man and he was bang on.

I studied Drama and English under Mr Lannon from 1986-1989 whilst a student at St Catharines Collegiate. He directed me in a number of productions and under his guidance I developed a deep love and passion for Drama and Literature which has stayed with all my life. He was a profoundly empathic and talented teacher who understood me better than I did myself. He was a rock during some very troubled adolescent years and his unyielding belief in my talents and capacity to learn helped me into University and further study beyond. Many a time when reflecting on key people in my life who have shaped my future for the better, Peter Lannon comes to mind. I am eternally grateful to have known him.
My sincere condolences to his family. May your loss be lessened knowing how positive a force Peter was in this world and how his gifts live on in all who had the good fortune to know him.

We are very sorry to hear of Peter's passing. Peter Lannon was a wonderful caring skilled educator and a legend at Grantham high school where he was both my English teacher and sea cadet commander (RCSCC Linwell). Later he became a valued colleague at the St Catharines Collegiate (Sorry about the smelly football equipment room you and your drama students had to pass every day!) and still later I was fortunate in being able to hire Peter for a long term occasional teaching contract. He and his stories (especially about working at radio station CKTB and with Rex Stimers) will be missed. Our deepest condolences to Valerie, Pater, Matthew and Brendan.

My condolences to the family on the passing of such a unique and gifted man.
I had the privilege of watching and working along side Peter at the Collegiate. Peter did so much for the school and the students loved him. He had a wonderful sense of humour which made him fun to work with. Peter was a great teacher, director and speaker and I can still hear his voice on Remembrance Day when he related a war experience to the entire school. The family and all of us have been blessed to have had Peter in our lives!

He was my English teacher for one year in high school but more importantly he was leader of the Sea Cadets I was a Wrenette for 3 years. He took us sailing. This was important for me because I was from a family that had little money for lessons and none for holidays. He expanded my world and what I thought was possible for me. I went to University, did well, got a Ph.D.

Mr. Lannon was my English teacher for Grades 11, 12, and 13 at Westlane Secondary School, Niagara Falls, in the 1960's. Not only was Mr. Lannon a wonderful teacher but he contributed so much to the school, particularly through his work with the drama club. I still remember the productions of "Oklahoma" and "Where’s Charley?" that Mr. Lannon directed. I was happy to meet him again at the reunion celebrations for Westlane's 50th anniversary and to tell him that he was my inspiration for becoming an English teacher myself. My sincere condolences to his family.

Mr Lannon was my Grantham High English teacher and Sea Cadet leader. Seeing his birth year means he was about 27 or 28 when I knew him. He did not look much different than the picture of him here. My favorite (perhaps mythical) story about him was the time he showed the sea cadets his German Luger hand gun which he demonstrated in the basement firing range. He shot at a target that was in front of straw bails backed onto a cement wall. All went as planned, however, soon it was discovered that the school heating system was not working. Upon investigation it had bullet holes in it. The heating system was right behind the firing range cement wall. ooppps. He was one of of the most memorable teacher I had at Grantham... all students knew and had great respect for such a personable teacher and leader. RIP

In the classroom and in the small community of RCSCC Linwell, (Sea Cadets at Grantham High School,) he was one of the most influential people in my life. I am sure that this is a sentiment that will be echoed hundreds of times over the next few days.
Rest in peace, Mr. Lannon. You will be remembered by all who had the good luck to know you.

Peter Lannon was my Grade 9 English teacher at Grantham High School. He conveyed to us rowdy teenagers the beauty of the English language, and was positively enthusiastic even about the grammar!
He was an outstanding mentor to students who wrote for the school newspaper, the "Grantham Gander". And he was the heart & soul of the Sea Cadets, taking us sailing on Lake Ontario, and on all manner of outings, and teaching us to shoot(at targets!) on the rifle range in the basement of the school.
Thank you, Mr.Lannon. Rest in peace.

Hello to Valerie and the boys, Peter, Matthew and Brendan. I was one of the Sea Cadets at Grantham High School in the late 50s and early 60s. Peter Lannon was one of the finest people I have ever met. He allowed me a lot of leadership latitude as a cadet (ie student) and encouraged me in many ways that I have never forgotten.
I have been in the Vancouver area since 1973 and for quite a while I lost contact. In 1986 another cadet friend (Gaele Smith) and I visited with Peter to renew an old friendship - it was as if I had been away for only a few months.
God bless you all. We lost a good man but I'm sure his kind, thoughtful personality will be a great influence on you as you move on through life.

I cannot begin to tell you what this man meant to my education and my life.
He inspired me, encouraged me, gave me confidence and he believed in me. He believed in all of the members of The Underground Theatre.
He brought together a group of energetic oddballs who forged life long friendships. All of us will be eternally grateful to this man.
