Vera Shach

Obituary of Vera Chrystyna Shach

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Vera Shach at Linhaven home on January 3rd, 2024 in her 91st year. As the matriarch of a close and loving family, she will be best remembered as a role model for forgiveness and love as for her grace and elegance. A woman whose life was defined by family, her unwavering faith and her Ukrainian heritage. Vera was predeceased by her parents Stefania(1972) and Taras(1973) Makuch, brother Ihor Makuch (1989), loving husband John Shach (1996), and beloved son John Jr. (2002).
Left to mourn her passing are her children Stefan Shach(Donna), Maria Korda(Roman) and grandchildren Orin, Nina, Olexander and Stefa. Born in Peremyshlyany, Ukraine, Vera was displaced by the Second World War and immigrated with her family to Feldkirch, Austria where she completed secondary school. In time, the opportunity to immigrate to Canada was realized and the family settled in Toronto. There, within the burgeoning immigrant Ukrainian community, she made lifelong friendships, and it was there in 1952 that she met and married the love of her life John Shach. Later John and Vera moved their young family to St. Catharines.
Vera was an outstanding cook and superb baker who took great joy in entertaining family and friends. In healthier times she loved to spend time gardening, listened to opera and enjoyed the fellowship of a good game of bridge.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Linhaven for their compassionate care of our mother over the last year.
Cremation has taken place as per Vera's wishes. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church on Lakeshore Rd. on Saturday February 10th at 11am. If desired, donations for Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine can be made in Vera's memory.

May her memory be a blessing
