Obituary of Daniel A. Evans

Daniel (Danny) A. Evans, B.A., M.D., F.A.C.S Peacefully at the Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre on September 1, 2009, in his 86th year. Danny, beloved husband of Elizabeth (Betty) for 58 years; cherished father of Nancy and her husband Craig Draper and their children John and David (Oshawa), Ann Evans and her son Paul Malczak (Ft. Lauderdale), Mary Ellen and her husband Bob Chown and their children, Danny, Erin and Andrew (Oakville), Janet and her husband John Lee and their sons Brendan and Justin (Regina) and his son, Mark Evans (Toronto); dear brother of Blanid Cranney, Agnes Boyle, The Honourable Gregory T. Evans and Austin Evans; brother-in-law of Noreen McCooey, & Frances Battle; brothers-in-law, Rev. Msgr. Lawrence Battle, Justin Battle, and David Battle, and dearest uncle to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Mary Helen and Thomas Evans, brothers Judge Joseph Evans and his wife Annette, Gerald Evans and his wife Joan. Also predeceased by his sisters-in-law Zita Evans, Rita Evans, Barbara Fairley and her husband George, Patricia Beaudry and May Battle; and his brothers-in-law Ernest Battle, James Cranney, Hugh Boyle, and Lt. Col. Larry McCooey, and by his beloved grandson, Peter Malczak (January 2009). Danny received his BA from St. Joseph's University in New Brunswick, and further studied sciences at St. Francs Xavier University in Nova Scotia. He completed his medical degree in the first graduating class at the University of Ottawa in 1951. He concluded his surgical residency in Worcester, Mass., and Philadelphia PA., and received his Fellow of the American College (F.A.C.S.) in 1956. A dedicated physician, he began his medical career in St. Catharines in 1955 and continued his practice in St. Catharines for the next 36 years at the Hotel Dieu Hospital and the St. Catharines General Hospital. He served as Chief of Staff at the Hotel Dieu for a number of years. In 1985 he was instrumental in bringing the oncology department to the Hotel Dieu. As a reflection of his respect and his deep love of life, Danny was influential in founding Birthright of Niagara. He was appointed as a Le Royer Patron of the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph of the Hotel Dieu of St. Catharines. A generous spirit, Danny was a man of faith, compassion and great humour. He loved his family and brought much hope to his many patients through the years. Friends and family are invited to GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St., on Thursday, September 3, 2009, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Vigil prayers will be held in the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Julia Roman Catholic Church on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 1 p.m. Rite of committal to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.
