Obituary of Leo Edward Bonomi
Leo Bonomi: A Life Lived in Love, Faith, and Service (1950 - 2025)
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Leo Bonomi, a beloved husband, father, Papa, and devoted member of the St. Catharines community. Leo passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, February 16, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer, surrounded by the unwavering love of his wife, Phyllis.
Born in St. Catharines on November 13th, 1950, to the late Alois and Martha (Martina) Bonomi, Leo spent his entire life deeply rooted in the city he cherished. From his birth at the old Hotel Dieu hospital to his lifelong residence on Welland Avenue, Leo embraced the heart of downtown St. Catharines, where he lived, worked, and formed countless lasting relationships. The son of hardworking immigrants, Leo followed their example especially using the skills he learned working with his dad on their rental properties as he meticulously restored his Victorian home, a testament to his appreciation for timeless beauty. He could be seen daily walking to his workplace, always stopping at the Market Square to offer a kind word and generous spirit to all he encountered. Leo was a devoted brother to the late Joseph Bonomi, Louie and the late Joanne Bonomi, and sister Rosemary Zimmerman.
For 40 years, Leo shared his life with his beloved soulmate, Phyllis (MacDonald). As a husband, he was playful, kind, and ever the gentleman, keeping Phyllis laughing until his final days. Together, they raised four beautiful children: Martina Flatman (Conrad), Genevieve Broadley (Christopher), Bridget Jensen (Trevor), and Thomas Bonomi (Tamarra). He was a patient, gentle, and endlessly loving father. His love extended to his twelve grandchildren, Alice, Edith, Lucy, George, Pippa, Edmund, and Adeline Flatman; Leo and Malcolm Broadley; and Katrina, Patrick, and Rose Jensen, who knew him as a devoted "Papa." He leaves behind a legacy of wisdom, faith, and affection.
A proud graduate of Western University and Windsor University, Leo dedicated over 45 years to his career as a financial advisor and broker. He built a reputation for honesty and integrity, serving his clients and the community with unwavering dedication. His ethical approach and genuine care for others made him a trusted figure to many. Beyond his professional life, Leo had a passion for uncovering hidden treasures at flea markets and thrift stores, a hobby that reflected his appreciation for history and enduring quality.
A lifelong and devoted parishioner of the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria, Leo received all of his sacraments within its sacred walls. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and generously volunteered his time to various community organizations, including St. Catharines Right to Life, the Rotary Club. Leo had a lifelong interest in economics, politics and social issues. He cared about making Canada a more prosperous country to that end was involved in local politics including running as a federal candidate and serving as a Catholic School Board Trustee.
As Leo neared the end of his earthly journey, his children gathered at Holy Mass, offering their intentions for him in prayer. His legacy will endure in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched through his work and service. His selflessness, compassion, and unwavering faith served as an inspiration to all who knew him.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all who offered their support and prayers during Leo's illness. Your kindness and love make all the difference.
A funeral mass will be held at the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria on Friday, February 21st at 10:00 am, followed by interment.
