Edmund Tierney

Obituary of Edmund John Tierney

Tierney, Edmund John, (August 5, 1932 to February 11, 2025), passed away peacefully in his 93rd year after a short illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sheila Tierney (nee Ryan), and his children Ryan (Sharon), of Mississauga, Ann (David Steele), of Kingston, and Drew, of New Zealand. He was also an adoring, proud and much loved papa to Colleen, Kieran, Garrett, and Liam Tierney, Bridget (Nicholas Gregg), Calum (Kelsie Norman) and Brendan Steele, and Quinn and Ciara Tierney. He took immense delight in the recent addition of his great grandson, baby David Steele. Ed is also survived by his brother Albert Tierney of Kingston, many nieces and nephews and their families and many wonderful friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Marie Tierney, his sister Clara and infant brother, Thomas.

Born and raised in St. Catharines, he graduated from the St. Catharines Collegiate and became an electrician, working first as a ship’s electrician on the Lakers that travelled through the Welland Canal and the Great Lakes system, then with E.S. Fox and the Lincoln County Catholic School Board. Technically curious, with an exceptional work ethic, he could fix anything, earning him the moniker “papa fix” as each of his grandchildren would bring him broken toys or electronics to repair. He met his wife Sheila, a young school teacher from North Bay Ontario, at a church dance and they went on to have a wonderful and long life together first in St. Catharines and then in Niagara-on-the-Lake (Virgil) where they were very involved in the community. Always having a great love of water, they had many adventures first on their sailboats and then at their beloved cottage in Georgian Bay where they spent many good times with family and friends, boating, swimming, fishing, enjoying happy hour, and watching the sunsets. Ed was kind and thoughtful, valuing family and friends above all, and always willing to give a helping hand.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Credit Valley Hospital, especially the doctors and nurses on Floor 1D for their excellent and compassionate care. A funeral mass will take place on Monday April 14, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent De Paul Church Niagara-on-the-Lake, followed by a reception at the church hall.
