Obituary of Sophia Maria Verbraeken
VERBRAEKEN, Sophia Maria (nee Grootscholten). It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the loss of the matriarch of our family. She left us too soon just shy of her 83rd birthday, on Sunday, November 24, 2024 after a brief battle with cancer. Reunited with her best friend and loving husband of 53 years, William “Bill” (2015). Amazing mother to Ron (Carrie), Brigitta (Dave), Sylvia (Mike) and Wernher (Josephine). Proud Oma to Sean (Amber), Nicole (Jason), Danielle (Juan), Rachel (Greg), Adam (Tierney), Jacob, Katerina and Nathan. Great Oma to Cheyleigh, Sophia, William, Harper, Dylan, Angelina, Luciana, Joshua and Cleo.
She will be dearly missed by her large family and many friends in both the Netherlands and Canada. We will miss her loving nature, sense of humour and most of all, “Oma’s Yummy Soup”. May she rest in peace.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joe’s for their excellent care as well as the staff at St. Catharines General. In accordance with Sophia’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive guests at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., on Saturday, November 30th, 2024 for a time of visitation from 11:00 – 1:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 pm in the funeral home ceremony room. Guests are welcome for a reception afterwards. If desired, please consider memorial donations made to the Canadian Lung Association in honour of Sophia.
