Obituary of John Muir Short
John Muir Short (1938-2025)
John was a witty and beloved husband and father whose quiet demeanor belied a vibrant personality and deep love. He was called home on June 9, 2025 in St. Catharines, ON. John is survived by Ryan and his beloved daughter-in-law, Catherine.
John was born in Kilmarnock, Ayreshire, Scotland in 1938, the second oldest of 4 brothers; the late George (the late Margaret), Sandy (the late Lily), and the late Jim (Elisabeth). After marrying the love of his life, Jessie, in 1960, he embarked on his 2 years of national service. Later, he and Jessie moved from Scotland to Canada and after settling they welcomed a son, Ryan, in 1972. Jessie went home in 2014.
A skilled Layout Fitter with Lord and Burnham, an example of John’s work can be admired at the glass roof of the Toronto Eaton Centre. An avid competitor in Judo, John achieved First Dan (Shodan) Black Belt in the late ‘60’s and became a sensei to many of those who learned Judo in St. Catharines. In later years, John dedicated his time to caring for Jessie while she was at Linhaven Long Term Care Home. Befriending many residents, John continued to volunteer after Jessie’s passing, sharing a smile and a pun with anyone who would listen. John was especially appreciative for the saints at Scottlea Gospel Chapel for their calls, cards and visits. Many thanks to the friends at Sunset Homes for their camaraderie and support. Special thanks to the staff at Pioneer Elder Care for their wonderful care during the last 6 months of John’s time with us
.
