Obituary of Edith Sauer

SAUER,Edith

Edith (nee Subbert, Schroeder) died peacefully at Sunrise Senior Living in Aurora, Ontario at the age of 97. She was predeceased by her 2d husband Rudy and her daughter Adelheid.

She leaves her sons Juergen (wife Jackie) & Ferdinand Schroeder, loving daughter-in-law Ann, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren & 1 great, great grandchild. She also leaves her sister Uschi, the last of her 7 siblings. Also, there are many nieces and nephews in Ontario and Germany who lovingly remember her.

Born in Plau, (East) Germany, after surviving WWll at the age of 15, Edith moved to Hamburg for domestic employment & then to work in hospitality. There she met her first husband Hans Schroeder and had 2 children, Juergen & Adelheid. In 1956 Hans organized immigration & moved to Canada, with Edith following with the 2 infants not knowing a word of English and being seasick until they landed in Halifax. They first settled in Toronto, then Brampton where Ferdinand was born. In 1961, after having lost everything in a house fire, they returned to Germany & later briefly moved to England, then back to Canada.

Edith married Rudy Sauer in 1978 & they settled in Bolton, Ontario where they loved their gardens & adopting their neighbours as extended family. After Rudy retired, they ventured on many trips back to Germany. When their traveling days ended, they moved to St. Catherines where after several years, Rudy would pass away. Edith relocated to be closer to her son Ferdinand & wife Ann at Sunrise Senior Living in Aurora where she flourished for 7 years, being an active participant & enjoying most all the activities (exercise, painting classes, trivia, bingo, armchair travel). We are thankful for the attentive, caring staff & nurses at Sunrise, particularly at her ending days.

Edith will be laid to rest at the Aurora Cemetery on Yonge St. A memorial will be organized at a later date to celebrate a life well lived.
