Leaf was a dear Soulful Singing friend who I sang with online most days for five years. When Leaf lived in Kingston, we were also neighbours, living just a couple of streets from each other.
Leaf was a bright light in my life who always showed up with kindness, presence, and curiosity. Their commitment to justice, the earth and learning ways to live in right-relation with humans and all beings inspired me and so many. Plus, what an incredible teacher, speaker and visual artist! So gifted and always so generous to share their gifts.
I will miss Leaf deeply and there is a big hole in our Soulful Singing community where Leaf came into the zoom room from their kitchen or shed or garden. I had a visit with Leaf earlier in March, and even though they were very unwell, in pain and exhausted, they expressed so much gratitude for their family and friends, the trees and the birds, food they could still enjoy and gentle hugs. That was Leaf: shining with grace and gratitude, even in great difficultly.
So much love to all whose hearts are torn from the loss of Leaf. We are bound together through our love and care for them and how they touched our lives with their special fairy-ness, smartness, warmness...
Rest In Peace dear friend Leaf, free from pain and struggle, entrusting all of us to carry on your legacy of living with deep heart, an engaged mind and willingness to put your body on the line for what is just and good.

Leaf was my art teacher for a little while and I would like to say a few things about them.
Leaf was a wonderful teacher and I am honored to have been able to be taught by such an angel, leaf was always there for all of their students and it was the sweetest thing. Lead helped my make my sculpture of a mushroom named Todd and we have a blast Making it and it was something we constantly talked about and was an enjoyable part of my high school experience and I wish that everyone can have the experience with a teacher that I had with leaf. I’d give anything to see them one more time and tell them how much I appreciate everything they did for me over the semester.

Leaf was one of the teachers who used to work at my school and a teacher I was close too, it’s upsetting to see them gone but I’ll cherish all the memories I’ve had with them all the nice long talks we would have at pride council, the time i help encouraged you to do karaoke and went on stage with you and especially all the advice you gave, it really does hurt to see you gone but I know you’re in a better place sharing your fun and wisdom with everyone, shall you rest in peace Leaf

Lucas- Leaf shared how her teaching career was so gratifying because of students like you. They told me all about the karaoke you did together and how it brought them such joy! They would hope that you take care of yourself and continue to share compassion and kindness. Take care- Leaf’s Aunt

Leaf,
You continue to surprise me with our connection as wild spirited cousins. Even in the afterlife.
I am so grateful to Leaf for being the pioneer of all 28 of the Kretz cousins. Leaf paved - no, bulldozed the way for us all through their bold life choices. There’s nothing that was un-cool about Leaf and unworthy to look up to.
In our last phone conversation two weeks ago, I was able to thank Leaf personally for paving the way for us younger cousins to feel comfortable in our own skin - tattooed or not , relationships or lack of, identities, educational choices and so much more. They said to me after a deeply spiritual and joyful conversation, “I really did my best, and now I take a bow.”.
Round of applause, Leaf.
I wish I could request an encore.
For now, I’ll look at my own fairy installment in my home, finished on the day of your death. Unknown to me that you had one too until I saw your obituary.
Eternal love and respect for my cousin,
Kaja

This is an email I sent to Leaf last week, sharing some favorite memories from her younger cousin. I wanted to share with all those out there who love and miss her too.
Dear Leaf,
I have heard the tragic news about your health and have been thinking about you every day this past week. What has come to mind is a slideshow of my favorite memories with you that I wanted to share.
The first is a bedroom - yours, I think - when you were 8 or 9 I would imagine. I had my favorite cabbage patch kid who I named her after you. I adored you both - my beautiful older cousin and my lovley doll.
Later that day, or maybe years later, we sat in the kitchen with your mom. David and Michelle were there and you said your speeches outloud on your humble culinary stage. Awe is the feeling I remember. Such confidence and talent! I wanted to speak to the world like that. It came as no surprise to watch you, decades later, deliver your magnificent Ted talk. Public speaking is still a passion close to my heart and it started in your kitchen.
Somehow, magically, Nicola and I got to take you to England with us when we were small. I wish I could remember more of this time, but there are imprints that linger longer than the specifics, and I wonder if it was this time that always made you special to me, even when we didn't see each other for years.
In recent times, it was such a pleasure to have you join my Meaningful Conversations virtual book club - even though we are out on the west coast. For a few hours a week our worlds collided again and I know in another life - one where the tidal currents of our lives hadn't pulled us to different parts of the continent - we would have had many many more of these wonderful conversations.
Tonight, I am at the hospital myself, waiting for a baby to be born. I caught a little girl this morning and have been thinking about the messiness of birth and death - they are painful, precarious moments, these bookends of life. But both are so powerful and full of meaning. Fate has delt you a terrible hand here, and I am sure everyone who loves you (myself included) are feeling sad and angry your end is approaching. Despite all this, I hope you are able to find some space to feel your power and find meaning and have some moments that are beautiful.
Much love from your little cousin who will remember you fondly always,
Patricia
