Noeline Burford

Obituary of Noeline Burford

After 101 trips around the sun, (Iris) Noeline (Hoople) Burford, born February 06, 1924, went on her final journey. She booked her own flight - leaving Willoughby Manor, Niagara Falls, on March 14, 2025.

Noely touched so many people during her lifetime. Her genial manner helped form and maintain lasting friendships. No matter where you met Noely, she would find a common connection to talk about and have a story to share.

If you were from New Zealand, like Noely, you were friends no matter where and when she met you. Born in Auckland to William and May Brumby, the family immigrated to Canada when she was just four. Her father was determined the family would be 'Canadian." Throughout her life, she was a strong supporter of and grateful to this country for her blessings.

After graduating from the University of Toronto (1944), as an Occupational Therapist, she joined the army and was stationed at Camp Borden. It is where "Sister B" met Charles (Chuck) Hoople from St. Catharines. In 1946, they married and went on to have two sons, Dennis and Peter.

Together, Noely and Chuck opened Hoople Magder Travel. She met the challenges of wife, mother, and working full time. Noely and Chuck also had a full social life, entertaining people from around the world. Noely enjoyed time in her garden, reading, creative work with her hands and crosswords.

After Chuck's death (1983), she continued to manage the business and demonstrated what a strong and determined business woman she was. Noely always enjoyed the adventure of travel and visited more than 35 countries.

At a Toronto reunion at Humberside Collegiate, Noely became reacquainted with Fredrick Burford. Their friendship grew and Noely returned to Toronto, marrying him in 1995 until his death in 2007.

Predeceased by both sons in 2017, Noely leaves many memories with her much-loved family. Daughter-in-law, Debbie Hoople and granddaughter, Jessica (Ntayega) Niagara Falls as well as niece, Linda Hammond (Peter) St. Catharines and great nephew, Bradley Hammond, (Melissa DiCostanzo) Toronto. Her family and many friends feel fortunate to have had such a role model.

Much appreciation to the staff at Willoughby Manor for the care and compassion demonstrate over the years - especially Marie, a true angel.

At Noely's direction, cremation has taken place and she will be laid to rest at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines, with her "boys" in a private inurnment.

Noely knew the challenges children could have if you were different. As a result, she supported Operation Smile, Canada. If you wish to make a memorial donation to this charity, the family thanks you.
