We have know Bernie for years. he was our friend and neighbour. We went to the beach with his brother Alan and wife Anne Brooks. Bernie was a little older than us but we would visit with he and Anne until she went back to England. We used to go dog walking with the neighbours until most were gone. Bernie was a lovely man with a kind heart who everyone liked. When he had heart surgery in Florida he came back home and was not quite the same. I never met his children or grandkids as they were living in different cities. He talked warmly of his children and grandkids. Bernie was always trying to quit smoking and we all had suggestions. He tried hypnosis, gum, books, patches and our encouragement. My husband just talked to Bernie the day before the ambulance came. We had no idea he had passed until the other day when another neighbour said he was gone. It was quite a shock even though his health had failed in the last decade. We knew Bernie for decades when he would walk to GM and Anne would be cooking and telling us funny stories until he came home. My children were fond of him and he was always kind. He was amazingly kind, both of them when we lost our son and I called my daughter who was very sad. We are the last few original neighbours who knew Bernie decades ago. He loved music and was very talented. A proud Englishman. Please accept our warmest condolences and affection for him. I lost track of Anne when she left for England because she was homesick and he had a grown family. If Anne is still alive please give her our love. She truly loved your father and friend. We shall miss his face and his charming manners. I an glad you were with him when he passed. Your father was well respected by all of us on Vale and I hope his spirit is healthy and whole. God Bless Bernie you were a truly kind neighbour. Your friends and neighbours
