Louise Szala (nee Bulanda)

Obituary of Louise Szala (nee Bulanda)

Szala, Louise (nee Bulanda ) - Just shy of her ninety-second birthday, Louisa Susanna Szala (nee Bulanda) passed away as she always wished: living independently in her own home, with no lengthy illnesses, and surrounded by remembrances of an active life lived to the fullest. Devoted wife of the late Feliks Szala (1918-2003), much loved “Mumsey” of Janine (Bob Arthur) and Linda (Tom Goldspink), she was born in St. Catharines on May 3, 1925 to Susanna and John Bulanda, and predeceased by her brother Arthur “Bolo” Bulanda. Readily adapting to the many changes that life presented, “Lucy” was a trailblazer in her own way, balancing both a home and a career. She managed the Odeon Theatre for years before joining the sales team at Towers as the ladies wear buyer and manager. A member of the Canadian Polish Society and a devoted parishioner of St. Alfred’s Church and OLPH, she was well known and admired in the community for her iconic sense of style, ready and eager smile, inviting manner, and compassion for everyone she knew and met on her daily walks about town. Grace, dignity, immense strength of character, intelligence, devotion to her Catholic faith, a wonderful sense of humour, and a deep love for family and friends were the hallmarks of this remarkable lady. Special acknowledgment of Elin and Dave Adam, Jennie Zaroda, her beloved Wanda and the entire Blaszynski family who have been devoted friends and neighbours for over sixty-five years. Special thanks to Doctors Gruber, Bieko, and Chauhan for always providing strong support for Louise, making it possible for her to live a long and fulfilling life. Public gathering will be held at the George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton Street on Wednesday between 4-7pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Alfred's Church, 272 Vine Street, on Thursday at 11 am with reception to follow in church hall. A private family burial will take place at a a later time at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hotel Dieu Shaver Rehab Hospital in honour of Louise.
