Obituary of Derek Thompson

THOMPSON, Derek - Passed away peacefully at the St. Catharines General Hospital on November 26th, with his family at his side. Born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, he was the beloved husband for 52 Years, of Christine (Booth). Much loved father of Shawn (Kristi), and Craig (Kim), and the lights of his life, his grandchildren, Ayden, Quinn, Brayden, Sydney and Brody. Brother in Law to Barbara Phillips (John), Melvyn Booth (Marie), Julian Booth (Patty), and Julie Cook (Andrew). Derek also had many much loved nieces and nephews who appreciated his unique outlook on life. Arriving in Canada in 1963, Derek worked as a Millwright and Lead-hand at General Motors in St. Catharines for 35 years and enjoyed many happy years with his workmates. His true passion was Soccer. He played for U.A.W. in St Catharines and later in Niagara Falls. He then embarked on a successful coaching career, with Welland and in St. Catharines with the Club Roma Cosmos of the NSL. Through his guidance, he helped shape the lives of many of Niagara's top players and was instrumental in securing a number of U.S. soccer scholarships. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPE, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines on Friday December 4th from 2p.m. - 4p.m. and 7 p.m.- 9 p.m. Memorial Service will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 5th in the funeral home chapel. Memorial donations to Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family.
